Sagmeister gives us a list of things that he thinks can give a piece of work heart; then he cautions that following such a checklist will not automatically give your work deeper meaning. Some types of worth can’t be created with a recipe. Maybe soul depends on a certain amount of chance. How could the Chinese criminal possibly have known that he was going to be dangled out of an 18th floor window? Perhaps the best work is a lucky combination of having the potential (pen in pocked and the ability to keep cool while the blood rushes to your head) and circumstance (being suspended out the window). Maybe the best we can do is put as much as we can into our work, and just hope that the fates will align- bring us the right viewer at the right time or let the shutter click at the perfect moment.
