Pidgin: a list of my personal favorites
I’m having a hard time figuring out exactly what I want to do for this project, so in the mean time I’ve made a list of words that I enjoy using the most.
bumbye: later, after (Try bring me some coffee, bumbye / Be careful bumbye you slip and fall.)
cockroach: to steal (She when cockroach my last soda.)
hanabudda: boogers (Hey there’s some hanabudda coming out your nose.)
… guys: used to refer to a group of people. Name one person in the group, tack on ‘guys’ and the listener will know who you are talking about (Last night we hung out with Jesse guys.)
pau: done, finished (I’m all pau!)
shoots: yeah sure / yes / see you later (“Want to get some coffee?” ‘shoots’ OR “Kay then, see you later” ‘shoots’)
boolay: kind of like brah, dude, brother (Ho, whats up boolay?)
cherry: awesome, sweet (oh brah, he get one cherry scooter, cuz.)
cuz: maybe this came from cousin, maybe from because, but its good to add as an emphasis (see above)
chee hu/chee pono: an exclamation, often screamed, pono=righteous ( ::yelled while bombing a hill on a skateboard:: )
hammajang & kapakahi: both mean messed up, crooked, confused (Your glasses stay all hammajang. How come that picture is all kapakahi on the wall?)
halanka: something you say to tease someone who did something wrong (Halanka! I’m telling your mom.)
dirty lickins: beat up (He is going to give you dirty lickins for looking at his girlfriend like that.)
makapiapia: sleep in your eye (Its so early, I still have makapiapia.)
oof: sex (They when oof last night.)
try wait: hang on. We tell people to try do things a lot. Try listen, try look, etc (Try hand me that wrench)
giri-giri: that spot on your head where your hair swirls (Weird, he has three giri-giris.)
rubbish: garbage (Try throw that in the rubbish.)
jan ken po: rock paper scissors, pronounced junk and po (Junk and a munk and a saka saka po!)
