Improvisation
A solution that works in one situation wont work for another, which is why we must improvise. Design, music and other experience based disciplines are not as black and while as math or science, there are no right or wrong answers. I think its very true that successful work is a collaboration between the creator and the audience. Without any feedback a monster can be created and we all know that that doesn’t do any good. Liz explained it simply and well in her lecture with a venn diagram. The designer has an idea and the audience can see what is working and together we have an idea that works. And yes, we are very lucky to be working in a time where this collaboration is at our fingertips 24/7/365 with the internet.

I’d also like to note that its important to feel comfortable in the the medium in which you are playing. Angus MacGyver is widely acknowledged as a god of improvisation because along with his trusty Swiss army knife, he was equipped with a strong base of knowledge that enabled him to quickly and confidently figure out a solution. Jazz musicians being able to string notes together with ease (once given their limitations) is no different. Which is why we need to become astute in our field as well.
